Depending on how you define the word “speak,” English may be the most spoken language on Earth. According to reliable estimates, around 1.4 billion people know at least some English. They may not be fluent in it, since most of them learn English as a second or foreign language. In fact, only about one-third of English speakers learned it as their native or mother tongue. Its popularity as a second language is what will inevitably make it the most spoken language in the world, if it isn’t already.
At last count, Mandarin Chinese was the most popular tongue, with over one billion speakers. That’s almost one-fifth of the world’s population. However, few speak or study it outside of China. English is different. Along with French, it is the only language that is spoken on five of the seven continents. A total of 88 states and sovereign nations have accepted English as their official language. Ironically enough, the English-speaking nations with the three largest populations–the United States, the U.K., and Australia–have yet to declare English their official tongue. There may be an explanation for this.
English has always been a thoroughly democratic and egalitarian language whose diversity is without equal. Words from every world language have made their way into English, including Latin, Greek, French, Spanish, German, Russian, and Yiddish. This has helped make it an infinitely more inclusive and accessible language than any other. It also doesn’t hurt that English is the language of pop culture.
Whether you grew up in China or Germany, odds are you know the English lyrics to at least a few rock, pop, or rap songs. Global events like the Oscars and the Super Bowl are transmitted to billion of viewers around the world, often in English. Not to mention the fact that it is easily the most popular language on the internet.
According to a recent study from W3Techs, an internet tracking firm, more than half of all the websites on the Internet use English as their primary content language. It is no wonder then that the use of the language has nearly tripled online over the past decade, or that enrollment in online English courses has reached a record high.
What are the benefits?
In addition to conversational courses, it is also possible to take classes in basic to advanced English Composition on the internet. As with most foreign tongues, new students often have a much harder time putting pen to paper than they do actually speaking English. For these industrious scholars, a traditional English Composition class may move too fast. The new student often finds it easier and more productive to slow things down a bit. Of course, that is not possible in a regular classroom, where the needs of other students must be considered. However, if you enroll in an online English course, you can work at your own pace and master the skills you need to succeed.
A good online English course offer one-on-one attention from a teacher, professor, or instructor. They can be completed from the comfort of your own home where you can hone your writing skills gradually. And once the course is completed, it should be possible to transfer earned credits for online Statistic courses or English to the college or university of your choice.
